Top things to do in Lake District
"The poet William Wordsworth's most famous residence in the Lake District is undoubtedly Dove Cottage, but he actually spent a great deal more time at Rydal Mount, 1.5 miles northwest of Ambleside, off the A591. This was the Wordsworth family's home from 1813 until the poet's death in 1850 and the house contains a treasure trove of Wordsworth memorabilia. Bus 555 (and bus 599 from April to October) stops at the end of the drive."
"On the eastern shore of Coniston Water, Brantwood was the cherished home of John Ruskin (1819–1900), the noted Victorian artist, writer,…"
"Sitting above Stock Beck next to Rydal Road, Bridge House may be the whole region’s most photographed landmark. Like all of Ambleside this adorable, narrow dwelling is constructed from local slate and has been owned by the National Trust for nearly a century after it was bought and donated by a group of local residents. The Bridge House dates from the 17th century, when it was used as an orchard storehouse, and has since been a mill counting house, chair-maker’s workshop, cobbler’s shop, tearoom and a family home packed with as many as eight people."
"Our hotel is perfectly situated with views of Lake Windermere, just a short stroll from the bustling village centre of Bowness-on-Windermere and the boats that travel the length of Windermere, making it easy to visit Ambleside, Brockhole, Wray Castle and Lakeside without a car. The Lakes Hotel & Spawas previously called the Burnside Hotel & Spa. The hotel has some of the best on-site facilities in the area, half of the rooms with hot tubs on private balconies, an on-site spa with poolside seating and a bar, stylish restaurant and cocktail bar, bike hire, wakesurfing and paddleboading."
"On the shores of Lake Windermere, Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spahas an award-winning restaurant, a beauty spa and scenic views. Windermere centre is a 20-minute walk away. With 2 AA Rosettes, the restaurant serves a modern menu featuring quality local produce and organic ingredients."

"10/06/2021: My partner and I had a main meal, desert and coffee and everything was absolutely delicious, I'm not at all surprised there was a small queue outside!. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and even came outside to give us a rough idea of when we might get a table, we will definitely be visiting again 😊"
"After a long walk around Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Falls, we stopped off in Gandhi’s Cafe for a much-needed refuel. Mat had their Thali, which was a mouthwatering selection of small Indian dishes, and I had the creamy & delicious ‘George’s Korma’. They also have lighter bites like soups, sandwiches and salads."
"We love this pub, not only for the wide variety of boozy drinks, but also for its quirky local name. Originally named the New Hall Inn, it became famous as The Hole in t’ Wall due to a gap in the brick that was knocked through so they could continue serving beer to blacksmith while they were working!. The wide array of cask ales, nice rum and over 20 gins – as well as good pub grub – make this a great place to end your evening after a full day exploring this stunning area."
"06/06/2021: Popped in for drinks on Friday evening and found the staff very friendly, atmosphere was pleasant. Nice area to sit outside in front of the pub. Top tip - get there before 9pm - currently last orders at 9pm due to staffing shortages."
"The piece-de-resistance at The Wateredge Inn on Borrans Road has to be the large lawned garden that sits right on the lakeshore. There’s even a jetty with boat moorings!. You can enjoy a locally-sourced traditional pub meal and then head out into the beer garden and maybe even dip your toes in the water while you sup your drink of choice."
"Also offering dog friendly accomodation, the bar and restaurant in the Wateredge Inn offers some great value food and a relaxed atmosphere. Check with staff when you wish to dine, as dogs are welcome but only in certain areas. If the sun is out, then head to the beer garden for your dinner and enjoy views over Lake Windermere."
"Wateredge Inn stands on the shores of Lake Windermere, a short walk from Ambleside centre. Set across two former 17th century fishermen's cottages, it offers cosy bedrooms and period features. Many rooms feature lake views and some have lake view balconies or garden patios."
"This quirky bar with a trendy interior serves Pacific-style street food in a bustling atmosphere, giving you an experience that’s unlike any other pub in Windermere. Along with regular live music evenings, they do cocktail making classes, yoga disco and private pod karaoke – this is probably the most energetic Windermere pub!. We love their Sunday lunch menu, and recommend the Flamed Pork Belly."
